river nairn angling association 2018 home the fishing permits gallery catch & release conservation more weather forecast water levels facebook page img_3032 img_3029 1/16 river bailiff 0782 5554808 news 2018 **** welcome to the new naa website **** 22nd july 2018 ​ ​ at last we had a spell of heavy rain on friday, but the river only rose a paltry 3 inches on saturday and promptly fell back to well below summer level. plenty fish were seen running up on saturday and gordon rennie had a sea liced grilse and lost another 2. sandy wallace also had 2 grilse fishing in the evening both 4 lbs. wednesday and sandy ord had a sea liced 7 lb salmon in town water. we badly need a good flood to get things moving but the signs are not good, with seemingly no rain in the coming week. the following is an update from fisheries management scotland regarding pink salmon : ​ we have been informed of a recent capture of a pink salmon on the south coast of norway by an angler, and we understand that a pink salmon may have been caught in commercial nets in ne england. we would like to take this opportunity to remind all dsfbs and trusts to remain vigilant to the possibility of these fish turning up again in scotland this year. it is important that anglers, and other stakeholders are also made aware of this possibility. whilst it was initially felt that the odd-year class of fish were likely to be most prevalent, it is possible that stocks from even-year classes may occur. as before, fisheries management scotland will assist with the collection of any information on incidences of these fish, and if you do record any sightings or captures, please advise us as soon as possible. please record the following information, and, where possible, retain whole fish, scale or tissue samples. date caught location with approximate grid reference - (you can use https://gridreferencefinder.com/ ) method of capture (or details of mortality) sex of fish size of fish length (cm) weight (kg) scale sample retained (y/n) frozen sample retained (y/n) any other relevant information contact the nairn bailiff if you have one of these fish. ​ ​ ​ 1st july 2018 ​ ​ week beginning 18th june and the drought conditions continued and the level on the upper river dropped below the previous record, and was within 2cm of the record on the lower river. heavy showers gave some relief to the findhorn but missed the nairn catchment - a one inch rise was all we got. this however was enough to stimulate at least one fish and tackie mackintosh landed a 4lb grilse on the lower river. shoals of grilse have been seen at the mouth of the river. week beginning 26th saw a 12lb fish to tomma reay, tackie mackintosh also had a 12lb fish, john main a 7 pounder, and stuart hayden a 14 pounder (returned). a few grilse in the 4lb range were also landed. shoals of grilse are still to be seen at the river mouth so sport could be good when we get rain, but at the time of writing the settled spell seems set to continue. important notice for all members " until further notice fishing at the the howford pot is not allowed ". ​ 3rd june 2018 ​ ​ well the rain last week never really came to anything and the nairn remains extremely low it looks like we heading for a mini heatwave next week which is the last thing we need. seldom has there been such a prolonged shortage of rainfall on the river much to the dismay of nairn anglers. the nairn is not alone as many other spate rivers are in the same predicament. an interesting point is that hydro controlled rivers in particular the conon have in the last 2 weeks seen the appearance of a reasonable number of grilse. this is much earlier than normal usually it is mid july before they are seen in any numbers. there is no doubt the long cold winter has impacted spring fish coming into the river unfortunately since it warmed up we haven’t had any rain to speak of. for sure when it does come there should be a large number of fish coming into the river. ​ ​ 28th may 2018 ​ the river reached its all time low at balnafoich last week, since sepa started recording. this did however benefit some of the planned river work to rebuild some damaged croys and also remove trees that were embedded in some of the pools in the kildrummie area. the landowners had given us permission and after a presentation to sepa which got approval, the work was carried out last week. hopefully this will benefit our members and also the river itself. what we need now is some water and it may be coming later on this week on thursday. thanks to our committee members and other members who gave their time to assist with this work. 28th may 2018 ​ river levels are back down and we have a bit of a heatwave so prospects are not good. mike hendry hooked a big fish in cawdor pot and lost it on friday then saturday davie mackintosh hooked the fish of a lifetime in the howford pot and after a 20 minute battle it took him through a root and broke him - says it was at least 20 lbs. goes to show some decent fish have moved in with that last rise in water. ​ 23rd may 2018 ​ well the river did come up but not to a level you could described as a spate, however it should have been enough to entice some fish in. unfortunately the expected influx of fish did not materialise. a large number of anglers were out early doors but results were in the main disapointing although there were some successful anglers. there are unconfirmed reports of a 17lb and 8lb fish caught. however a nice sea-liced fish of 11lb was caught and safely returned by dave johnstone see gallery. another fish was reported caught by eddie wallace from budgate at 12lb. ​ ​ 21st may 2018 ​ things have been very quiet of late with no rain the river has dropped a significant amount as can be seen from photos from above and below the bridge at milton. no doubt there will be large number of fish now waiting in the harbour to run the river. however things may just be about to change as the current rain which will continue into tomorrow morning will no doubt put the river up enough to encourage these fish to run the river. these will all be springers and there will be some big ones among them so make sure you use appropriate leader material within the clubs limits....tight lines !! ​ 16th may 2018 ​ nothing to report although this should not be a surprise due to the lack of rain and low water. it has been reported that there are plenty of salmon smolts being seen in most of the pools seen so thats a good sign. ​ our bailiff alastair has asked should anyone spot any diseased fish in the river that they contact him 0782 5554808 and do not try to remove the fish themselves, he will take care of the fish. ​ ​ 9th may 2018 ​ nothing to report for last week aside from the fish landed by gordon. the river has dropped back once again to summer level and more rain is urgently needed but the forecast for this week is dry, so low levels are going to be the norm. even the smolt trap has stopped working due to low river level. the outlook does not look good as no rain seems to be the forecast for the next 2 weeks​ recently the bailiff has found some anglers fishing with fixed spool (spinning) reels and weights while the red marker on the gauge is visible. members are reminded of the low water rules (11, 12 and 13 in the permit) when the red marker is exposed: ​ spinning reels are not permitted while worm fishing (only a centre pin fly reel can be used). weights are not allowed (other than a single size 4 swivel). spinning is not allowed. weighted flies e.g. brass or copper tubes, or weighted leaders are not allowe d. ​ ​ 3rd may 2018 ​ ​ a small rise on the river today did put some fish on the move, gordon rennie caught and released a nice sea-liced fish from the howford see gallery. ​ 28th april 2018 ​ ​ a quiet week on the nairn with the river falling away to almost summer level. no catches to report this week. on the flip side the next lift in water will be as a result of rainfall and not sn
